The unique and wonderful Etrange Festival celebrated its 20th anniversary this year with a spectacular line-up, which, as always, defied categories with the latest offerings from Takashi Miike and Marjane Satrapi, special programmes picked by Godfrey Reggio, Jacques Audiard and Sion Sono, musical events, emerging talent, short films and an exhibition on Fumetti.<\/p>\n

Among the freaky treats on offer, we loved Kim Ki-Duk\u2019s extreme castration drama Moebius<\/I><\/A>, Bill Morrison\u2019s elegiac The Miners\u2019 Hymns<\/I><\/A>, the Mo Brothers\u2019 action thriller Killers<\/I><\/B><\/A>, Fabrice du Welz\u2019s staggeringly intense take on the Honeymoon Killers story Alleluia<\/I><\/a>, atmospheric Irish ghost story The Canal<\/I><\/B><\/A> and offbeat Iranian vampire tale A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night<\/I><\/a>. <\/p>\n

Older treasures included Sergei Paradjanov\u2019s sumptuously poetic Sayat Nova<\/I><\/A>, Jerry Schatzberg\u2019s seminal 70s road movie Scarecrow<\/I><\/A>, J\u00f6rg Buttgereit\u2019s ingeniously disturbing The Death King<\/I><\/B> and Blaxploitation rarity Dolemite<\/I><\/B> while the Pere Ubu Film Group\u2019s did a live score to Carnival of Souls<\/I><\/A>.<\/p>\n

Marjane Satrapi\u2019s dark animated killer tale The Voices<\/I><\/B> won the audience award and we were particularly excited to discover David Robert Mitchell\u2019s fantastical take on American sexual puritanism It Follows<\/I><\/A>, David Wnendt\u2019s uninhibited erotic comedy Wetlands<\/I><\/a>, Nacho Vigalondo\u2019s found footage thriller Open Windows<\/i><\/a>, Austrian Western The Dark Valley<\/I><\/a>, Aleksei German\u2019s last film Hard to Be a God<\/I><\/a>, hallucinatory French nightmare Horsehead<\/I><\/a> and Austrian experimental dance film Perfect Garden<\/I><\/B>.<\/p>\n

To mark its anniversary, the programme also included a selection of the best of 20 years of the festival, including Nikos Nikolaidis\u2019s demented noir<\/I> homage Singapore Sling<\/I><\/B>, Ian Kerkhof\u2019s avant-garde documentary Beyond Ultra Violence: Uneasy Listening by Merzbow<\/I><\/B>, Harmony Korine\u2019s Gummo<\/I><\/B>, Clive Barker\u2019s Lord of Illusions<\/I><\/B>, the short films of the Quay Brothers<\/A>, Duncan Jones\u2019s Moon<\/I><\/A>, Hungarian oddity Hukkle<\/I><\/A>, Shinya Tsukamoto\u2019s Tetsuo<\/I><\/A> and Ben Wheatley\u2019s Down Terrace<\/I><\/A>.<\/p>\n
