With a new Artistic Director bringing a breath of fresh air into the festival, the line-up of 69th Edinburgh International Film Festival promises a diverse selection of what\u2019s new in British and American indie cinema, mixed with some classic treats and a vast number of smaller gems from around the world that are unlikely to be coming to a cinema near you any time soon.<\/p>\n

Running from 17 to 28 June 2015, the festival opens with homegrown feature film The Legend of Barney Thomson<\/b><\/i>, about a Glasgow barber who accidentally turns into a serial killer, and closes with Scott Graham mild family drama Iona<\/i><\/b>, with plenty of thrills on offer in between.<\/p>\n

The Night Moves strand has been notoriously hit-and-miss in recent years, but hopes are high for this year\u2019s selection, which includes Takashi Yamazaki\u2019s adaptation of Japanese body-snatcher manga Parasyte: Part 1<\/i><\/b>, Corin Hardy\u2019s terrifying feature debut The Hallow<\/i><\/b>, Bobby Roe \u2018s mockumentary-mixed-horror-fiction The Houses October Built<\/b><\/i>, Hungarian fantasy flick Liza, the Fox-Fairy<\/i><\/b>, Australian futuristic action-adventure Infini<\/i><\/b>, and Turbo Kid<\/i><\/b>, a retro homage to sci-fi\/horror films.<\/p>\n

We also look forward to the final film by gothic horror master Carlos Enrique Taboada, Poison for the Fairies<\/i><\/b>, which screens as part of a special focus on Mexican cinema alongside Alejandro Jodorowsky<\/a>‘s <Santa Sangre<\/i><\/a> and 60s supernatural drama Macario<\/i><\/b>. <\/p>\n

Standing out from the pack in the New Perspectives strand are low-budget Japanese sex comedy MakeupRoom<\/i><\/b>, Austrian comedy Therapy for a Vampire<\/i><\/b> and two German entries: Kafka\u2019s The Burrow<\/i><\/b>, adapted from the author\u2019s 1923 short story, and Baran bo Odar\u2019s Who Am I – No System Is Safe<\/i><\/b>, starring Tom Schilling (Oh Boy<\/i><\/a>). <\/p>\n

Other highlights in the programme include US productions Dope<\/i><\/b>, directed by Rick Famuyiwa, and Jon Watts’ B-movie Cop Car<\/i><\/b>, while Simon Pummell\u2019s sci-fi feature debut Brand New-U<\/i><\/b> and David Blair\u2019s supernatural thriller The Messanger<\/i><\/b> both seem worth checking out from the selection of British films on offer. <\/p>\n

In addition to all things new, this year\u2019s main retrospective focuses on Walter Hill<\/a>\u2019s early career, including his car chase classic The Driver<\/i><\/b>, the suspensful and sweaty Southern Comfort<\/i><\/b> and The Long Riders<\/i><\/b>, Hill\u2019s take on the exploits of the Jesse James and Cole Younger gang. Running parallel to this, the Little Big Screen showcase features an eclectic mix of 1960s and \u201870s American TV movies and offers a rare chance to see Sam Peckinpa’s Noon Wine<\/i><\/b> on the big screen, and a couple of vampire cult classics: Tobe Hooper’s Salem\u2019s Lot<\/i><\/b> and John Llewellyn Moxey\u2019s The Night Stalker<\/i><\/b>. Other classic treats include Mark Christopher\u2019s belated director\u2019s cut of his cult disco film, 54<\/i><\/b>, and a beautifully remastered version of Carol Reed\u2019s classic The Third Man<\/i><\/b>, ahead of its limited theatrical run across the UK at the end of this month. <\/p>\n
