Back in Competition for an eighth time, Jim Jarmusch will premiere his bus-driver drama <a href=\"http:\/\/www.electricsheepmagazine.co.uk\/reviews\/2016\/05\/16\/paterson\/\"><i>Paterson<\/i><\/a>, and also present his Iggy Pop documentary <a href=\"http:\/\/www.electricsheepmagazine.co.uk\/reviews\/2016\/05\/20\/gimme-danger\/\"><i>Gimme Danger<\/i><\/a> in a special screening slot. <\/p>\n<p>After premiering his sci-fi thriller <b><i>Midnight Special<\/i><\/b> at the Berlinale in February, Jeff Nicholl has already completed his next film. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.electricsheepmagazine.co.uk\/reviews\/2016\/05\/16\/loving\/\"><i>Loving<\/i><\/a> stars his long-term collaborator Michael Shannon alongside Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga as the inter-racial couple Mildred and Richard Loving, who were jailed in Virginia in 1958 for breaking state laws by getting married. <\/p>\n<p>Set in colonial Korea in the 1930s, Park Chan-wook\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.electricsheepmagazine.co.uk\/reviews\/2016\/05\/15\/the-handmaiden\/\"><i>The Handmaiden<\/i><\/a> is based on Sarah Waters\u2019s novel <i>Fingersmith<\/i>. Other literary adaptations include Xavier Dolan\u2019s star-studded <b><i>Only The End of The World<\/i><\/b>, an adaptation of Jean-Luc Lagarce\u2019s play about a terminally ill writer who returns home after a long absence, and Paul Verhoeven\u2019s <b><i>Elle<\/i><\/b>, based on a thriller by Philippe Djian and starring Isabelle Huppert as a businesswoman who is attacked at her home one night and decides to stalk her assailant back.<\/p>\n<p>Olivier Assayas\u2019s second English-language feature <a href=\"http:\/\/www.electricsheepmagazine.co.uk\/reviews\/2016\/05\/17\/personal-shopper\/\"><i>Personal Shopper<\/i><\/a> has been described as \u2018a ghost story set in the fashion world\u2019 and plays alongside other promising titles such as Na Hong-jin\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.electricsheepmagazine.co.uk\/reviews\/2016\/05\/19\/the-wailing\/\"><i>The Wailing<\/i><\/a>, a highly anticipated Korean blockbuster about a detective and a shaman, Scottish director David Mackenzie\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.electricsheepmagazine.co.uk\/reviews\/2016\/05\/17\/hell-or-high-water\/\"><i>Hell or High Water<\/i> <\/a>and <b><i>Sierra-Nevada<\/i><\/b>, the latest film from Romanian filmmaker Cristi Puiu.<\/p>\n<p>In comparison, this year\u2019s Un Certain Regard strand looks slightly weaker than usual, but there are two Japanese titles to look out for, Koju Fukada\u2019s <b><i>Harmonium<\/i><\/b> and Hirokazu Kore-eda\u2019s <b><i>After The Storm<\/i> <\/b>as well as Singapore filmmaker Boo Jungeng\u2019s <i>Apprentice<\/i>, described as a morbid prison drama that explores the relationship between the prison\u2019s chief and a young correctional officer.
