Sarris was working up to an assessment of Edgar G. Ulmer\u2019s <i>Daughter of Dr Jekyll<\/i> (1958).<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In his new book <a href=\"https:\/\/titanbooks.com\/kim-newmans-video-dungeon-the-collected-reviews-8516\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i>Video Dungeon<\/i><\/a>, Kim Newman has written about ten sub-categories of \u2018everything\u2019 \u2013 from found footage and Bigfoot movies through the weirder appearances of Frankenstein and Dracula and group-of-random-strangers-wake-up-in-a-trap pictures to Weird Hippie Shit and made-for-cable CGI mutant shark or snake attack cinema.<\/p>\n<p>To launch the book, Kim will be talking about critiquing films some reckon beyond or beneath or outside criticism, illustrated with clips from the weirdest and rarest films. He will consider critical approaches to what Michael Weldon calls \u2018Psychotronic Cinema\u2019 and less perceptive souls write off as \u2018junk\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019ll look at the Golden Turkey\/<i>Mystery Science Theatre<\/i> brand of snark, the engaged approach of John Bloom writing as Joe Bob Briggs, fanzine legends like Bill Landis (<i>Sleazoid Express<\/i>), the cataloguing frenzy of <i>Video Watchdog<\/i>, academic and personal approaches from Carol Clover and Kier-La Janisse and curatorships like Cigarette Burns, the Final Girls and the Miskatonic Institute itself.<\/p>\n<p><b>About the instructor:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Kim Newman is a novelist, critic and broadcaster. His fiction includes <i>The Night Mayor<\/i>, <i>Bad Dreams<\/i>, <i>Jago<\/i>, the <i>Anno Dracula<\/i> novels and stories, <i>The Quorum<\/i>, <i>The Original Dr Shade and Other Stories<\/i>, <i>Life\u2019s Lottery<\/i>, <i>Back in the USSA<\/i> (with Eugene Byrne), <i>The Man From the Diogenes Club<\/i>, <i>Professor Moriarty: The Hound of the d\u2019Urbervilles<\/i> and <i>An English Ghost Story<\/i> under his own name and <i>The Vampire Genevieve<\/i> and <i>Orgy of the Blood Parasites<\/i> as Jack Yeovil. His non-fiction books include <i>Nightmare Movies<\/i>, <i>Ghastly Beyond Belief<\/i> (with Neil Gaiman), <i>Horror: 100 Best Books <\/i>(with Stephen Jones), <i>Wild West Movies<\/i>, <i>The BFI Companion to Horror<\/i>, <i>Millennium Movies<\/i> and BFI Classics studies of <i>Cat People<\/i>, <i>Doctor Who<\/i> and <i>Quatermass and the Pit<\/i>. He is a contributing editor to Sight &amp; Sound and Empire magazines (writing Empire\u2019s popular Video Dungeon column), has written and broadcast widely, and scripted radio and television documentaries. His stories \u2018Week Woman\u2019 and \u2018Ubermensch\u2019 have been adapted into an episode of the TV series The Hunger and an Australian short film; he has directed and written a tiny film <i>Missing Girl<\/i>; he co-wrote the West End play <i>The Hallowe\u2019en Sessions<\/i>. Following his Radio 4 play \u2018Cry Babies\u2019, he wrote episodes for Radio 7\u2019s series The Man in Black (\u2018Phish Phood\u2019) and Glass Eye Pix\u2019 Tales From Beyond the Pale (\u2018Sarah Minds the Dog\u2019). He scripted (with Maura McHugh) the comic book miniseries <i>Witchfinder: The Mysteries of Unland <\/i>(Dark Horse), illustrated by Tyler Crook; it\u2019s a spinoff from Mike Mignola\u2019s Hellboy series. Lovecraft\u2019s literary mythos, The Miskatonic Institute of Horror Studies is a non-profit, community-based organization that started in Canada, founded by Kier-La Janisse in March of 2010.
