This month we explore the dark and supernatural side of ballet on film with articles on Suspiria<\/a><\/em>, The Red Shoes<\/a><\/em> and Dracula: Pages from a Virgin’s Diary<\/em><\/A>.<\/p>\n

New cinema releases include Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Micmacs<\/a><\/em> and Japanese debut Asyl<\/em><\/A>, which centres on an unusual \u00e2\u20ac\u02dclove hotel’ in Tokyo. We examine how Takeshi Kitano confronts his \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcBeat’ Takeshi persona in the long-awaited Takeshis’<\/em><\/A> to offer an iconoclastic dissection of fame. We also have a profile of veteran cinematographer Wolf Suschitzky<\/A>. In our blog, we discuss our favourite Hitchcock blondes<\/A> in anticipation of the Blonde Crazy retrospective at Birds Eye View next month and we have reports on the Berlinale<\/A> and the Himalaya Film and Cultural Festival<\/A>. <\/p>\n

In the DVD section, we review Fritz Lang’s unsurpassed classic M<\/em> and Craig Baldwin’s conspiratorial history of Scientology Mock Up on Mu<\/a>. In Short Cuts, we have a report on the 7th London Short Film Festival<\/a>, which once more offered many memorable moments, while in our Alter Ego column Welcome to Mars<\/em> author Ken Hollings<\/a> tells us why he would be Astro Boy if he was a film character. Finally, quirky pop genius Lightspeed Champion<\/A> picks his favourite films in the Film Jukebox.<\/p>\n
